Hi,
Just wondering how many people that post here Crit photos first,or,do they post and then crit all the while checking to see who will crit their photos and once they do crit other photos, how many of US keep checking that the people WE crit, will return the favor ? honest answers..Or do they post,do their 3 crits and walk away..?

its more a mood thing, some times I am in a critique mood, and I will critique a batch of shots, usually, if I post a shot, I critique 3 more as a matter of habit. Personally, I don't check to see if the person that I critique returned the favor, I prefer to keep the two separate. I do check sometimes people critique ratios to see if they are only a poster.

For me posting and critiquing are separate activities. I log in regularly to see what's been posted - photos and forums. If I see a photo where I think my critique might offer something helpful to the photographer, I'll write a critique. Lately I try to remember to check critique ratios before writing.
On totally separate occasions, I'll be working with my own photos and see something where I'd like to get some input. I'll then log in and post that photo.
I don't think I've ever checked whether someone I critique returns the favor, though once in awhile I will recognize a name, and think, "Oh cool, I just critiqued one of hers/his." Kevin

In my personal habits there's no correlation between posting and critiquing beyond the 3:1 critique/upload relation. While I'm a great fan of a balanced taking and giving ratio I avoid "returning the favor" to the same person as I'm not here for trading critiques and feel I rather stay independent and unbiased by anything but the shot itself. In fact I don't care much for a photographer's name (unless their work shows a truely unique hand for me - or they have proved to lack appreciation in the past), certainly not in advance. I rather check their critique karma, and I will not care for lazy critiquers. Aside from that there are days where I feel like speaking, others when I prefer listening - and the latter might refer to feedback on other works as well as my own.

Hm. Looks like the last photo I posted was part of one of the scavenger hunts...

I critique if I have something to say about a photograph. The is no connection between the photos I critique and the critiques I receive. "Returning the favor" is petty and creates ego massage groups.

I find nothing petty about it..The whole point of this site is to critique..I think that returning the favor of a crit and doing crits just because will get the ball rolling on some of these neglected and also, encourages people to do more crits, especially the new people..

I don't expect people who I critique to "return the favor". I don't upload a lot of photos. So, I critique through the week, whether I have a recent photo or not.

You don't want to create a culture of reciprocity here, so best avoid "returning the favor." I critique those photos I respond to; nothing more, nothing less.

i usually come here every month or so. and when i do, i'll rate everything on page 1. it moves so slowly now i would have to wait till the next day at times to rate the next bunch. then i upload when i have more points. usually when i'm done, i upload about 15 things or so, check out the crits i got, and then i go away for a while longer. it just takes too much of my time. and since i know how to critique my own work, the site doesn't pay for me to stay here for as long as i used to.

not in my eyes they aren't. i shouldn't have to stare at an image for an hour to pick out the flaws that i can see. i have to be able to see it fast, or i miss a shot when shooting.

So cool thoughtful deliberation has no part in your work then? Quoting from your profile 'real art takes time'. Mike
