In just one of the ways a photo is worth a thousand words (or more), the contents of a single frame can indicate a place. It might be a landscape that is well known and easily recognized, but that is pretty simple. It might be a person in a national or regional costume. It might be a road sign that is unique, maybe beyond just naming the place. It might be a subject with a reflection, where the reflection tells the place.

There are lots of possibilities. A photo of the Eiffel Tower or London Eye is both accurate and obvious, as is a landscape of the Taj Majal. Those work, but so do photos that require more thought, such as a Japanese Geisha, or a Scot in kilt. Or a sign in a unique script, where the script tells the place. You get the idea; make the photo that defines its location.

To qualify for this month's assignment,
  • Submit a photo that tells its location by its content.
  • If the location is not clear, tell how it is defined in the photographer's comment. (And I mean clear to me, not to you. If admins can't figure out where the photo was taken, it will be removed.)
If you have a story to go with the photo that you want to share with us, put it in the comment area below the critiques.

If you have any questions, email an admin. If your photo is deemed to not meet our assignment criteria and hence removed, please accept our decision graciously. Our decisions are not subjects for debate, so if you are not sure, ask first. To include your entry in the assignment, just check off the box that says 2011 06 ~ Where I'm from. You can view previous assignments here. You may submit as many photos as you like into the assignment. Good luck!

This assignment will be enabled on June 1 and run through June 30.
