Got notification of the shipment of my new CANON 50D w/18-200mm IS lens! Should be here tomorrow. Havent been this excited about phtogoraphy in a couple years, but this is giving me a new outlook.

I have a 20D, bought about a week before the 30Ds came out, and have been pi$$ed off about it ever since. Looked at CANON site and nothing mentioned a newer version with better shutter life (10X the 20D)at a better price. Always felt a little screwed over with that camera and never shined up to it. It takes great photos, but, the improvements a week later on the 30D just stuck in my craw.

So, selling the 20D and possibly the 28-135IS lens that I bought subsequently, and changing my attitude with the 50D w/18-200IS.

Oh boy...I CANT WAIT!

Congrats on your new toy. I wouldn't write off your 20D just yet. I bought one when its main competition was the Nikon D70. The 20D was the clear winner. I still have mine in the cabinet and when I feel the need to shoot in really bad weather, out comes the 20D. I shot a sailing regatta a couple of years ago in the pouring rain, all day, with my 20D. I had to dump the water out of the eyepiece so that I could see. There were no ill effects to the 20D or my 70-200L 2.8. I just wiped them off and let them dry before storage. I hope the 50D works out well for you.

Did you order the 50D before or after the 7D came out?

I have the 20D, and when I end up upgrading I am definitely keeping the old body. I like to shoot sports and would love to have a second lens/body combo on hand for fast switching.

lol...nope. I saw the 7D and its $1700 price tag (body only)..but elected to go with the 50D anyway. But gotta admit, I did start to think 50D, I procrastinate on big purchases, and the 7D showed up. I looked long and hard and decided on this camera instead.

If I were you, I'd hang on to the 20D as a backup camera. You never know when you'll get a "err99", plus you can't get much for 20D's these days anyway.

I learned it the hard way. After upgrading from the 20D to the 40D, I held on to the 20D as a backup for about a year, but never used it. So, I thought what the heck, might as well get something out of it, and sold it. $300 is all I could get for that body, a battery and a charger (kept all my lenses, of course).

A few months after that, I got the dreaded "err99" on the 40D, and after trying everything, ended up sending it back to Canon, and it was out of my hands for about 3 weeks, cost me about $150 for the repair, and there I was with no 20D to back me up while it was gone.

Ah well, live and learn.

The good news is that it made me reach up onto the antique shelf for something to shoot, and that's when I decided to get back to my film roots and some medium format goodness. The Mamiya C330 TLR and some fresh Tmax400 had me shooting again within days, and I've fallen in love all over again with the medium, including developing the negs here in my bathroom. And my Sekonic L558-R light meter is finally being put to good use again.

Now the bug's got me good and, like you, I'm waiting for my 'new' camera to be delivered. It's a Mamiya RB67 with a 90mm lens, 120 and 220 backs, a prism finder and a chimney finder, and a nice hard-shell aluminum case with plenty of room (which is good, because this thing's a MASSIVE BEAST!!! LOL)

Anyway, congrats man, and I'm right there with you in spirit, as we both wait for our new toys to show up!

I had the dreaded err 99 it was because I tried to use a SIGMA 400 on it without turning it off first. Most times, if I power down and change the lens it works.

Well, Im not planning on "giving it away", I ll keep it before I sell it for nothing. ADARAMA told me they d give me $500 minimum, and final price would be based on actual examination of the camera. Thanx for responses...

Thanks. I got it FRIDAY and am so excited. Now decision time on my 20D, do I give it to the wife who uses an ELAN presently or sell it?

I guess you could ask your wife if she'd like it. :)
