Thanks to Ben for hosting 22 (and choosing my photo as the winner) From what I understand, I pick a category that I hate. So here goes --- Partial Desaturation --- is the next topic. I absolutely hate it but have not been immune to its charms (don't click) Other rules 1. 0.5 TU extra if you upload since this message - so specifically for the competition 2. All entries by 21st Jan 2006 please (I don't understand the clocks in photosig so may mess up - don't leave it too late) 3. If Sheena lets us, the winner can have premium privileges for a period of time - a month maybe. This might increase the interest and prevent this from dying. That's it everyone, get posting!!

This is hard work - have to go through a lot of pictures now. Please remember, I am new here, and have learnt the rules of the challenge at the feet of the Master, so if you think the critiques are harsh, you know who to blame. Gary - Here is my revenge for calling my beatiful desaturated flower - a ray gun! 1. Here is a cool truck that belongs to my wife's doctor - Rubbish but let me know if he is selling! 0.5TU for the bright colours and another 0.5 TU for posting it for the challenge so a total of 1 TU, and that's because I am feeling generous. 2. This is the guy who comes after you if I don't score highly enough - I have to admit - rather good. It is subtle and that does it. The Steel blue eyes get 2.5 TU so total 3 TU. Please don't tell him where I live!

Matt Great Picture, I like the framing, the expression and the muted colours. I don't like the fact that when I said partial desaturation I meant selective desaturation. So I can only award it 1TU.
Edit : OK Matt, as others have submitted similar stuff and the fault is indeed mine, I will add another thumb which is how I would score it normally, so now this is 2TU

Hi Gert
Ha Ha - this is what I was waiting for - blown highlights, and messy background, retrieved with desat. I cannot decide between 1TD and 1 TU - so will call this one No thumbs

Here we go - I think I can present another couple of horrors as my first submissions ever to a game at Photosig
I like to ruffle your feathers
and
lovefor a lilly
Partial desaturation or colour-in I do think can be accomplished so it looks great. That is NOT to say my submissions are.

Not often I get an audible chuckle from a shot, but that first one is an absolute classic of a genre direct from Beelzebubs bottom. I must say, I think the second shot is more appropriate for entry into another genre - gratuitous nipple. Don't take any of this personally, just that monday morning feeling.

Lars Thanks for your entries 1. like to ruffle your feathers - When I finish my hacking course, anyone giving me a red thumb will find all their submissions changing to this photo. They are so obviously in love, and as the world loves lovers, I cannot be too harsh on the photo, so I award it 3TD 2. love for a lilly - Will you please change the title to the jagged flower- You may be surprised but 1TU is how I score it! I need to know how to store this thread (and links) for eternity. Anybody know how?

Its all very well indulging cocky comments on other people's pics, so here's a chance for you all to get your own back. Maybe too subtle to comply, but here's my bit of selective desaturation or whatever you want to call it.

What can I say John? Probably first ever, I enjoyed the critique more than the photo (Dogs)! A photo that is improved by the desaturation, so does earn points but still is only mildly interesting. The foreground is detailed with the low perspective, but the background is washed out due to the bright sky. 1.5 TU is how I rate it with 0.5 for submission for the challenge - This is a 2TU shot

I'm happy with the 1.5, the dogs do make up for anything else! The background is actually washed out by low cloud, though my photo fails to convey it.

Hi Richard Yet another situation proving the technique itself is not to blame. Looked through your portfolio, and this does improve on the saturated rose IMO. The crop is also better, the edges are crisp, but the shadows are a little intrusive. For me this is a 2TU shot

Hi Missy The lighting and the BG is great in your shot. Unfortunately I agree with the others on the crop. I also think the selective colour is implemented well which scores here. If you find an intact bottle and submit again you run the risk of 3TU. As such this is 1.5 + 0.5 making it 2TU

Eamon I am sorry I have not replied sooner. I sent my monitor to be checked out after I recovered from the fit. Can't remember much about what I was doing when I started fitting, but the ambulance guys tell me, that there was something blue on the screen. The monitor is now back, the idiots can't find anything wrong. I am scared of the guys in the dark glasses (They are looking at me, I can tell) so Blue gets 0.5 TU

Hi Sonja
ducks in distress - Good photo - Think about calling it "Ring 3" :) The pattern is nice but the selective desat does not work IMHO. I tend to agree with Marshall's comments in his critique to your shot. This is 1TU shot. nightmare of a mouse - Scary photo reminded me of this, scared me all those years ago. Much better effort, but the BG is not great, giving it the 'carpety' (have I just made up a new word?) feel. This is 2TU

Telemahos Hmmm as an example of how to ruin something by selective desat, you have shown a perfect example. I really like the photo, tells a story, with the strong tones, and then the sky turns blue!! This would be a 2 TU shot which loses 1TU for the desat but gains 0.5 TU for the submission so 1.5 TU

John
I like this. You want maths? Here goes. 0.5 TU for the motion blur 0.5 TU for the atmosphere, 0.5 TD for the too wide border, 1TU for the selective desat which enhances the picture - so that is sort of a 2 TU image (remember I am the judge so my rules for adding). And yes 0.5 TU for submission 2.5TU BTW do you dream in selective colour?

Hi Sheila Thanks for joining in. It was my first time in challege 22 as well. There is potential here IMO, but most of it has been discussed in the critiques. I think the exposure has been made for the white shirt which makes the image a bit flat. The selective desat does not really add much to the photo, and so I call this a 1.5TU shot

John I spent a long time reading the binary code - this is what I get âQ!=ª8׿[µE´[ÍR¥ª8×µ³ZUm kDW+kuÛêÕm not sure what it means - will keep trying! I have sent it to a few prominent dream analysts, to find out what you dream about. Will let you know as soon as I have more - meanwhile just keep taking the pills everday ;)
The photo - I think this is better. The background is better than in the last submission. The grains as well as the desat have helped as well, and this has given it almost a third dimension. The horses really stand out. I also like the fact that you have worked 'out of the box'. Selective colour has always been an afterthought for me - a poor way to improve a poor image. Here is something different. Indie 3, selective gets 2.5 +0.5 = 3TU

That is indeed a better photo. I like the framing, focus, and even the expression. You do need to clone out the window in the background. That is a distraction and my eyes were drawn straight to it. The desat works well as it is subtle and this photo to me is more 'balanced' than your last one (taking a quote from John) This is 2TU +.05 TU for submission = 2.5TU

Now there seems to be a problem. Gary as well as John managed to get 3TU from this miserly judge. So here is the result ............. I think Gary has shot the better photo. The light blue in the eyes have enhanced a great photograph. John on the other hand, has produced something that only works as it is selectively coloured. The photo would not be remarkable otherwise at all. There are other things going on here - like grains - but these only serve to enhance the effect. For this reason, in this competition John is the winner with Indie 3, selective. CONGRATULATIONS

Thanks, B.
That was a challenge that I instantly dismissed as I hate the technique, but then after trying it, then getting more involved, I really enjoyed giving it a whirl. Quite an entertaining do, all in all. I was also driven by a desire to set the next challenge, as I had an brill idea - the Rule of Thirds - thou shall not post any item of interest in any location within thy frame lest if fall betwixt the intersection of perpendicular thirds.
But then I realised that what I actually dislike is people's insistence on dredging this one up at every opportunity in their crits, I often like the pics, and more often decide that the ruler being used is not entirely accurate and all they really mean is off centre. Enough of that one, I won't challenge you to submit image following the rule of turds.
So thanks once again, and my apologies to others who submitted either worthy shots or the very essence of the worst of selective colouring - I can honestly say that I will never forget the BLUE one, mainly as it has etched itself onto my retina.
