From time to time, I have had a naive question about that why some photographer's works always gained one or two thumbs only whereas those ordinary gained twenty or thirty? The answer may be so simply because the former are not conformed to standard. I know, of course, there are so many elements to determine a photo in what conditions and how it will be above standard or below standard. However, except those sharpness, composition, colours toning, lighting, picture theme, decision-making, and the likes, are there any other reasons?

Some very good photos seem to get lost and not get the critiques they probably deserve. After I critique a photo I sometimes look at the photos they have critiqued and have seen many that are very good yet had only one or two critiques. I have found and critiqued many photos this way.

Sure there are other reasons. Some photos get more critiques because the photographer has lots of friends on photoSIG, he/she is very active in the community, and/or because he/she has given lots of critiques.
If you are wondering why your work is not getting more reviews it might be because you have only submitted a few more photos than critiques. Remember it is better to give than receive.

Yes, a factor of "lots of friends". For me, both photos and critiques are average, I mean "half and half".

If everyone had 'half and half', the average photo would get exactly 1 critique.

There are many reasons, from benign to evil for why some photos get critiques and some don't.
Just don't begn to confuse high ratings & attention with quality. Perhaps you could work a little harder at critiquing those overlooked images. You look a little behind to me.

These are my personal photoSIG morality judgements and do not necessarily represent the opinions of management, owner, sponsors & who ever else I'm supposed to say.
The most evil is making a shill account -- which incidently is against the TOS. Each person is only allowed one account. Shills are typically used to either rate 'enemies' down and/or themselves & occassionally friends up.
Giving a rating to an image for reasons other than the image, e.g. because someone else gave a rating you disagreed with, because you would like a date with the photog, because the photog is a friend, because the photog is an enemy, because the photog is _________ (fill in the blank). This also is against the TOS
Sadly, all of these evils do exist on photoSIG, though efforts are constantly being made to stop them.

Hello Bonnie : your answer is so impartially and full of justice, please accept my sincere thankfulness. Besides, appreciation should also go to all other respondents. For their responses, I learnt much indeed.

There are other reasons. These include whether the subject matter is popular at the time. If a lot of people are doing this kind of photography, they are more likely to critique, to think about the shot and maybe try to get some critiques back. If the subject matter is rather obtuse, then there will be generally less interest even if the shot is well performed. Sometimes it is an issue of activity on the site. Some people don't critique much and thus some people will pass by photos submitted by members who don't appear to be active critics. These are reasons that have less to do with the technicals of the photo and more to do with the level and type of participation on this site.

Good points David. Some photos are certainly easier to critique as well. It is far easier to give 2 thumbs up and some watered down praise on a JABF, "Nice DOF, pretty colours, good composition, good focus, lots of detail, thanks for sharing, please look at my JABF." than to give a critical review of an abstract.

I thought it was the very generic,
Just Another Banal (or Boring, if you prefer) Foto
but now that you bring it up, I think Sheena normally uses the ph spelling for foto. She often has an English twist to her words (can't imagine why), so maybe it is really
Just Another Bloody Flower.
These can be rather fun once you get started.

Again, Sheena : please pardon me for "English" is not my mother tongue. Would you mind tell me what does really mean of JABF ?

Just Another Boring Flower. Really just means any humdrum unimaginative presentation of a subject.

Yes, David. I think the "popular" is another reason although it may be unnoticed. I have also considered the same point that you explained here. However, sometimes we just "take a picture" and will not concern about what is the popular. Perhaps we may say that this is a matter of mass character.
