It doesn't seem that long ago that we were discussing quitting smoking, getting fitter lifestyles and all around health issues.

I have been smoke free ten weeks now and consider myself a non smoker. I joined the Y and am swimming laps, walking, working out and thinking of taking up boxing. (Anyone know anything about boxing?)

So how are the rest of you doing with the eternal quest for good health?

I am eating better... Lost 15 pounds. I can see stomach muscles again. I have a lot more energy. A heavier camera bag really helps build up muscle too.

Rob I knew something was different, you seem to strike the keys with more buffness lately ;-)

You bet. Wink wink. I am sure you are getting quite buff as well. Oh... keep your hands up and the key to a good fight is a great jab.

I don't really know what a jab is but I intend on learning. Also there are so many kinds of boxing... sheesh!

Well yeah...If I seem to remember correctly, that camera in your fridge could be a good deterrent... ;)

Pleased to use the phrase, "I quit smoking, before the war."

Still smoke free.

Primarily pleased to stink less, although I find myself scrubbing my feet more ;).

The notion of you boxing is frightening though.

Congrats, I bet you smell great!

Why is the idea of me boxing scary? :P lol

I am lucky that where I live recovering heart attack patients get a free health club and gym for 12 months properly supervised by medical staff. You have to pay after the 12 months but I am now into the regular excersise kick twice a week and am fitter than I have been for probably 20 years. Those of you who are considering joining a gym do it now before ill health forces you into it.

Sounds like you are doing great now! What kind of exercising are you doing?

Sheena,

Just an idea...

I have practised Judo since I was seven years old and have recently returned after a two-year break. At nineteen, I was already a blackbelt (2nd dan) and I became an instructor at 24. Because their are no blows involved, as with boxing or karate etc., it is arguably a safer sport, while remaining useful as a means of self-defence and getting fit. Generally, we work out aerobically for a full hour before even starting the Judo itself.

What Judo offers somebody like yourself is the opportunity to get seriously fit, learn an ancient and well-proven method of combat / self-defence (which in itself hones your focus and self-discipline) and to meet interesting and like-minded people.

All this without the risk of getting your nose broken or your jaw dislocated...

...I did break my arm once though...

Tim to be honest I know nothing about boxing or any of the martial arts. I just joined the Y and the trainer was showing me stuff and setting up my personal fitness plan. I got to punch the bag. I was really into punching that bag. That was the appeal. So do I get to hit something in Karate? (I'm checking their brochure now to see if they have Karate.)

If interested in any form of Karate, you might want to visit some place other than the Y. My oldest son is a black belt in Ti Kwon Do and we have been around the sport for thirteen years. Find a do-jeng (school) near you and just visit.

Thanks Carl. I just checked the brochure and they do have Karate. I really want to do it at the Y because I am already there twice a day swimming and stuff so it would be more convenient to add to the routine I'm developing there.

I did karate for two years as a teenager and took it up again a year ago after a break of - ahem - some years.

I just got back from the summer camp which was basically a week of three training sessions daily plus 90 minutes of stretching every evening. Watching some of the younger black belts doing their free-fighting was an inspiration in itself.

Another huge source of inspiration is one of our senior instructors who I believe is in her mid-fifties. She is the embodiment of so much that is good about the sport, and over the week she passed her 4th dan grading. Just about everyone in our federation looks up to her as a great inspiration.

Sheena, whatever 'floats your boat'...

There's no punching in Judo whatsever, but in Karate there's a whole heap of kicking, punching and er, chopping.

Clearly you need an outlet for whatever tensions administering this site must cause you and to that end, you should get out there and kick some butt.

"Hyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..........A!

Congrats Sheena. I quit smoking on the 1st of March after 34 years of it. My lungs are lighter now and my wallet heavier.

Sorry, the only thing I know about boxing is that I'm extremely competent at getting my ass kicked.

My father was a professional boxer. He won 80 of 85 fights, and got his nose broke 7 times. He held a record for getting the quickest knock out -- 11 seconds of the first round up in New Haven in the 1930s.

I would suggest just doing the training regimen and punching the bags but not actually fighting for real.

So I'm in the pool and the instructor says, Ok ladies put the pool noodle directly between your legs. I look around. No one is cracking a smile. Obedient, I struggle to push the giant, buoyant noodle between my legs. Suddenly my pool noodle breaks in half and leaps right out of the water in two pieces on either side of me. I die laughing underwater. Gotta love getting fit!

In order to get more exercise, I've started to order the half pound cheeseburgers instead of the quarter pound ones, and I do curls with them before I eat them.

Actually, I have been walking more and eating less over the past two months. I had ballooned up to nearly 270 pounds (I probably hit 270, but I stopped getting on the scale at 267). I looked like a blood-filled tick, but with a cuter head.

Pleased to announce that I am at an even 250 now and still losing. I'll need to drop more weight before Sheena completes her boxing lessons, so I can run a little faster!

Hi, I managed to achieve a high of 260lbs at the tender age of 47. I changed my eating habits, eating is now incrediblyboring, but I weigh less than 190lbs some 16months later and I aim to lose around another 10-12lbs before I hit 48 in December. Not only may I live longer, but it will definitely feel that way. Michael.
