What's New

photoSIG version 2.11 (July 14, 2008)

Some re-engineering on the image handling. The thumbnail-generation code is new and hopefully won't have the same problems with the thumbnails looking washed-out.

The system now generates a "blurred" thumbnail for R- and X-rated works and shows that thumbnail when the work is mixed in with G-rated works. The idea behind this change is to make more pages advertiser-friendly. Without the blurred thumbnail, one thumbnail can render an entire page unsuitable for advertising. That's not bad for you all, but revenue really takes a beating. In exchange for this "feature," I've removed some ads on other pages.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the problem with the accented characters not working properly

Have you filed your taxes yet?

This version introduces a major change in the membership system. Limited memberships are gone. Everyone who has not purchased a Premium Membership now has a Basic Membership. Performance enhancements and bug fixes.

photoSIG version 2.7.2 (May 21, 2005)

This release fixed a few very minor bugs in the previous version and added a utility to convert the articles from the version 1 format to the version 2 format.

photoSIG version 2.7.1 (May 15, 2005)

This is a small release that adds some code to detect expired Premium Memberships and ask people to renew them.

photoSIG version 2.7 (May 14, 2005)

This is the first new release in several months and primarily includes the new Articles section. There are also some bug fixes.

New or improved features

  • The most exciting new feature is the Articles section, which finally makes its appearance roughly two years after the release of version 2 of the software.
  • Upgrade to Editize 2.9 for greater browser compatibility.
  • Upgrade to MySQL 4.1.
  • The way the system tracks which pages you've viewed (to avoid double-counting) has been changed to use drastically less memory, which will hopefully make the system more reliable.

Bug fixes

  • The correct number of replies is now reported for forums and other category types.
  • The pager on the journals page has been fixed.
  • Changing the new date from the works page now correctly forwards back to works.

photoSIG version 2.6.3 (November 8, 2004)

This is primarily a bug fix release.

New or improved features

  • The way that the system regenerates certain data such as the total number of works was optimized and made about 50 times faster. Also, the system no longer blocks all requests while regenerating the data.
  • The system no longer expires all of the new counts simultaneously. It now uses an optimized algorithm that retains new counts for more or less time depending on the new date. The system also no longer blocks all requests while regenerating the new counts. This should eliminate the long delays experienced by many users.
  • A new index was created in order to speed up the discovery of new mail messages.

Bug fixes

  • Your boldface and italics are now saved properly when you are using Editize.
  • Photos can now be removed from inappropriate assignments. (More generally, you can deselect all of the checkboxes for an optional category type without having them mysteriously come back.)
  • Fixed the problem with inappropriate HTML appearing underneath thumbnails.
  • Journals are now sorted by creation order instead of by update order.
  • The database has been changed to accomodate the full title of a discussion; discussion titles are no longer truncated at 40 characters.
  • Fixed the HTML entity codes (for example, ") that appeared in help page titles.
  • Fixed the "{0}" that was appearing in reminder emails.
  • Fixed a bug with the PICS labels that are delivered with the pages.

photoSIG version 2.6.2 (August 10, 2004)

This is primarily a bug fix release.

Bug fixes

  • NullPointerException errors when creating or upgrading users have been eliminated.
  • The message about rating critiques ignores those that can't be rated.
  • Fixed the NullPointerException that occured changing new date from mySIG without first changing it from somewhere else.
  • The mask, start date, and end date are now saved properly with new categories.
  • The help pop-up no longer overlays the site logo over the text.

photoSIG version 2.6.1 (August 9, 2004)

This is primarily a bug fix release.

New or improved features

  • Editize has been upgraded to version 2.8.
  • photoSIG now offers category help on the edit work page.

Bug fixes

  • The problem with non-English-speaking users seeing things like ???message.0640??? instead of actual text has been fixed.
  • The system no longer generates an error when creating a new user account.
  • Images are once again loading from photos.photosig.com instead of www.photosig.com.
  • The Premium Membership purchase page works again. (Previously the system attempted to direct the user to port 8101 instead of 443.)

photoSIG version 2.6 (August 5, 2004)

It's been a long time coming. There are many new features in this version.

New or improved features

  • photoSIG now supports a user-configurable content filter. In previous versions, users could filter out works with ratings below a certain level. In this version, users can also filter out works that fall into certain content advisory categories. The content advisory categories are G (general audiences), R (parental supervision suggested), and X (may be unsuitable for children), and the content advisory category for each work is assigned by the artist at the time of submission.
  • The original non-square-root rating system has been restored. The total rating for a work is the total of its individual thumb ratings, and the total work rating for a user is the total of the ratings of that user's works. The critique ratings work in a similar manner.
  • A new content management system enables photoSIG administrators to create new pages and edit existing pages without requiring a new release of the software. This will eliminate the problems with out-of-date information appearing on pages.
  • Users can now maintain journals. A journal is essentially a private forum in which only the owner can start new threads. Users can use extended HTML, including IMG (image) tags, in their journals. Other users can reply to journal entries, but the owner of the journal can delete any replies and can also lock entries to prevent others from responding.
  • The mySIG area has been rearranged in order to make it easier to navigate.
  • Forum messages now keep track of how many times they have been read.
  • The Request Password page now accepts an email address in lieu of an account name.
  • The reminder emails that go out to users who haven't visited in a while now include the user's account name and a link to the Request Password page.
  • The Who's On page now reports the total number of users, number of signed-in users, and number of anonymous users.
  • When a user visits one of his or her own works, if there are critiques that the user has not rated helpful or not helpful, a reminder message now appears at the top of the page.
  • The About page has been updated.
  • The Chat page now features instructions on how to access the new IRC chat rooms.
  • The ad management system has been improved.
  • The object-relational mapping code has been rewritten and improved. (For the technically-minded, this mapping system has nevertheless been deprecated in favor of Hibernate, which the CMS currently uses and which other modules will use in the future.)
  • We are now using Resin 3.0.7 instead of Orion Server 2.0.2.

Bug fixes

  • The problem with the "remember me" feature in Netscape, Mozilla, and other non-Microsoft browsers has finally been resolved.

photoSIG version 2.5.1 (July 29, 2003)

This version mainly fixes some bugs reported in version 2.5.

New or improved features

  • The Featured Photographer (photoSIG) or Artist (artSIG) and the Featured Critic now display the most recent photos, works, and critiques from the featured users rather than the highest-rated.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the AlreadyExistsException when submitting photos or works.
  • Fixed the NullPointerException that occured when the user's browser did not send a User-Agent header.
  • Addressed several issues related to handling and displaying Korean text.

photoSIG version 2.5 (July 19, 2003)

This release fixes most of the remaining bugs in the software and also introduces significant new features. We also updated and/or changed some of the third-party software that we use.

New or improved features

  • Users can now write comments on works (artSIG) and photos (photoSIG). In comparison to critiques, comments carry no rating and have no restrictions on who may write them and how many each user may write.
  • The "Interrupted" page has been eliminated. The system can now track multiple ongoing interactions with users. (You may still see the "Interrupted" page if the system loses track of your session, however.)
  • The quality of the generated thumbnail images has been improved.
  • The Premium Membership payment pages have been revised. The new payment pages allow users to securely purchase Premium Memberships using their credit cards. We no longer require a PayPal account, although we still accept PayPal.
  • The Featured Artist (artSIG) or Photographer (photoSIG) feature has returned, along with a Featured Critic. Additionally, Premium Members can request that the system send them email when they are scheduled to be featured, usually 24-48 hours ahead of time.
  • The friendly green notices that used to inform users about various system events have returned.
  • Users now receive reminder emails ("We haven't seen you lately...") if they haven't signed in lately. These can be turned off from the mySIG pages.
  • The skyscraper ad space has been removed from the Forums, Users, and mySIG pages.
  • Changed the neglected page to display photos with fewer than three critiques rather than one.
  • Increased the time frame during which unregistered users can view-full size works and photos from 24 hours to 72 hours.
  • The profanity filter now tolerates slightly more profanity; we are sympathetic to the argument made by many people that profanity in and of itself is not necessarily offensive.
  • Premium Members can now find out when their memberships expire on the mySIG page.
  • Changed from Macromedia JRun 4 to Orion 2.0.2 in order to eliminate the reliability problems that we had with JRun.
  • Upgraded Struts to version 1.1.

Bug fixes

  • The "Remember me" checkbox now works correctly.
  • Fixed the various bugs associated with adding new cameras, films, filters, etc. (This fix is specific to photoSIG.)
  • Fixed a major bug in the code that strips HTML tags from critiques, messages, and other user input.
  • Fixed the pager on the mySIG portfolio pages. (It did not work correctly past the first page and showed an incorrect number of pages.)
  • Fixed the user administration pages so they no longer wipe out users' memberships.
  • Eliminated the closed connection exceptions that occured when the database connection pool returned a stale connection.
  • Fixed the error about field 1 not being set when saving registration information.
  • Fixed several causes of the field 0 not set error that occurs to some people.

photoSIG version 2.4.9 (June 28, 2003)

This release mainly fixes some bugs.

New or improved features

  • The Basic Member "turd" icon has been changed to a four-pointed star.
  • Added text to the invitation message explaining how to upgrade a Limited Membership to a Basic Membership.
  • Added a database index to speed generation of the Neglected page.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the missing "guide words" on the user directory pages.
  • Fixed a handful of broken administrative features.
  • Fixed the neglected page so that it performs its stated function; previously it was showing photos that had been neglected for 72 hours rather than 24.

photoSIG version 2.4.8 (June 25, 2003)

This release adds some significant new functionality and fixes some long-outstanding bugs. This is version 2.4.8 (instead of version 2.5) because while many improvements have been made, none of them required changes to the database or structure of the system.

New or improved features

  • New portfolio-management pages (accessable by clicking "mySIG" then "Works" on artSIG or "Photos" on photoSIG) allow creating and deleting portfolios and moving works or photos among portfolios.
  • New mail folder-management pages allow creating and deleting mail folders and moving mail messages between folders.
  • When writing a critique, you can now use the "Preview" button to check whether your critique conforms to the critique standards. The thumbs of the critique entry form--which are initally hollow--will fill in if the critique conforms.
  • The critique standard now only requires 15 unique words per critique, however the "short critiques" allowance has been eliminated.
  • The separate complimentary pass activation pages have been eliminated. The Create a New Account page now does the right thing when someone enters a complimentary pass code. Complimentary passes are now called public membership passes.
  • A new type of membership, a Limited Membership, has been added. This type of membership is available to anyone. The public Limited Membership pass code is provided on the Create a New Account page.
  • Contact page added to Main tab.
  • Administrator mail addresses added to the About page.
  • Upgraded to the latest Editize version 2.6.4.
  • Added some performance enhancements to the database integration code.

Bug fixes

  • The view counters now work properly. All view counts have been reset to zero, since many view counts were exaggerated due to bugs in the version 1 system.
  • The reported number of works or photos in a portfolio or category now updates properly when works or photos are moved among portfolios or categories.
  • The bug that caused images to be displayed larger than their actual size has been fixed, and the sizes of existing photos have been adjusted.
  • The problem of the mail message display not showing all of the messages in the Inbox folder has been fixed.
  • The mail message pager has been fixed.
  • The administrative warning pager has been fixed.
  • A bug that allowed users to submit critique ratings above one thumb-up and below one thumb-down has been fixed.
  • The number of "works" in a portfolio changed in photoSIG to the number of "photos."

photoSIG version 2.4.7 (April 22, 2003)

This is another bug fix release.

Bug fixes

artSIG version 2.4.6 (April 19, 2003)

This is another bug fix release.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the error that occured when someone tried to add a camera, lens, or other optional category to a photo. (This error was specific to photoSIG.)

  • Eliminated the "Can't insert page" error on the edit critique page.

photoSIG version 2.4.5 (April 18, 2003)
