John Hedgecoe’s Guide to 35mm Photography

John Hedgecoe’s Guide to 35mm Photography

Author: John Hedgecoe
Publisher: Collins & Brown
ISBN: 1-85585-714-6
Format: A5 hardback, 125 pages, over 315 pictures, tables and diagrams

This is the perfect beginners book. It covers all the basic technical, creative and compositional aspects of photography. Once you have read it you are 80% of the way to understanding all you need to know to make informed choices about the photographic craft.

John has distilled on each double page spread the essential elements of photography, for example:-
The power of colour.
Using Built in Meters.
Which Film to Use.
What is ‘focal length’?
Lead-in lines.
Emphasizing form and texture.

Each subject is dealt with in plain language and there is a glossary as well. Page 28 “Does focal length effect depth of field” is a little masterpiece of clarity in its own right. Its relatively small size also means you can carry it around with you for inspiration or information.

The title is a bit misleading while the 35mm SLR camera is used in some examples any user of a compact style camera (digital or film) would find a lot of benefit from owning this book. I have recommended it to friends and also given it as a present.

Searching by the ISBN on WWW.Amazon.com goes directly to the book.
