Conclusion

The Pentax 645AF and the Mamiya 645AF are nice cameras and I used them both prior to making a purchase. I setteld on the the Contax for a few reasons. One big reason is the construction. It feels solid, lighter than I expected and most of all it fit my hands the best. It accepts digital backs. The reason this matters is SADLY photography is heading towards digital and although I am fighting that transition tooth and nail, I know that it is a losing battle. Another reason is the AF is accurate and fast enough for me. Compared to my Canon 1V it is painfuilly slow but I do not shoot fast moving subjects with the Contax 645. Finally I must mention the glass. The Contax does use Zeiss lenes, and for me that was a huge deal. Having used the Hasselblad I fell in love with the lenses, but had a hard time focusing. The Contax 645AF is, in my opinion, and perfect hybrid. A perfect blend of function and optics. It is a fantastic system, hands down! So are you asking yourself why has he not said what is negative about the camera, Ahh I am about to! Here are the knocks on the cameras, and yes there are a few. One of the big knocks is the battery consumption, bring spare batteries, buy the motordrive if you can, it allows more batteries for longer shooting. A standard battery will let me shoot about 30 rolls of film, which sounds like a lot but at a wedding when you are getting about 100+ images you are cutting the battery use close. Knock nymber two: They are no longer manufactured, so this means parts will eventually become hard to find. As cheap as they are I say buy a spare body. Knock number three: The lenses are expensive, STILL! In conclusion; I guess you cannot go wrong with any medium format AF camera. I say buy what fits, what you can afford, and what your work dictates. Buying based on reputation can be dangerous. When it comes to reputation I say; it is usually deserved, both good and bad! I like the Contax 645AF because it fits my style. It fits the kind of work I do. The optics fit my style, which is rich contrasty images with detail. And sadly I must say I can put a digital back on it when the sad day arrives. Thanks for reading, I hope this helps?
